"We’ve changed the world before, and we’re going to change the world again."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown in today’s ‘make or break’ speech to the Labour Party conference.

I haven’t yet watched Brown’s hour on the podium yet, primarily because while I want it to inspire me and make me believe that he really can win the next election and stop that smirking Etonian from greasing his way into Number 10, I worry that it might just make me cry. And want to throw things. And then cry again. And resolve to move to another country.

However, the above statement is what’s really troubling me. It is - in the style of so much political rhetoric - a meaningless and very badly thought-out statement. Look at the evidence: apparently, Labour changed the world before. Right. So if they changed it before, presumably to try and make it better, why do they need to change it again? Did they get it wrong? Did the changes not go to plan? Did the ‘Things [That] Can Only Get Better’ (©D-Ream) end up as ‘Things That Got Better Temporarily But Have Now Got Worse So We Need To Start Over And Please Vote For Us So That It Can Be Just Like 1997 Again’?

My head hurts just thinking about this.
